Practice No.002: Keep a Promise to You
You make promises to yourself all the time.
I'll go to bed earlier tonight.
I'll make the appointment.
I'll start tomorrow.
I'm not answering that call.
I'm going to take a break.
I'm going to eat before I get too busy.
I'm going to spend some time on the thing I keep saying matters to me.
I'm not going back.
Some are small. Some aren't.
But there is something that happens when the promise is only to you. It becomes easier to move.
Tomorrow will work. After I finish this. When things calm down. Just this once.
And sometimes, without even realizing it, you become the easiest person to disappoint.
You would think twice before repeatedly making a promise to someone you love and then not showing up.
So why should your promises to you matter less?
You should let you love you.
Today, that love looks like keeping your word to yourself.
The Practice
Think about something you have been telling yourself you are going to do.
Don't choose the biggest thing.
We're not rebuilding your life today.
Choose something small enough to actually keep.
Maybe you said you were going to take a walk.
Drink more water.
Put your phone down before bed.
Work on your idea for twenty minutes.
Make the appointment you've been putting off.
Eat lunch away from your computer.
Stop checking their page.
Leave work on time.
Read ten pages.
Sit outside.
Say no instead of saying yes and resenting it later.
Choose something that matters to you.
Now make the promise specific.
Because “I'm going to take better care of myself.” Isn’t going to cut it.
Think along the lines of:
I'm going to eat lunch before 2:00.
I'm going to give my dream twenty uninterrupted minutes tonight.
I'm not answering work messages after I get home.
Make the promise small enough to keep and clear enough that you can't negotiate with yourself about what you meant later.
Now, SAY IT.
Today, I promise myself I will ____________.
That's it.
One promise.
Give the Promise an Anchor
Now we make it harder to forget.
Choose your Anchor.
Your mug.
What you're wearing.
Something on your desk.
Something you know your eyes will find during the day.
Every time you see it, remember: I made myself a promise.
You don't have to do the thing every time you see your Anchor.
The Anchor is there to keep the promise from disappearing.
Because the moment will come.
You'll get tired. Something else will feel more urgent. You'll decide tomorrow makes more sense.
You'll tell yourself it wasn't that serious anyway.
Maybe it wasn't.
But this isn't really about the walk. Or the water. Or the twenty minutes.
It's about what happens between you and you when you say: I will.
And then you do.
When It's Time
Keep the promise.
That's the practice.
Don’t think about keeping it.
Don’t make a prettier plan.
Don’t wait until you feel more committed to yourself.
Do the thing you said you would do.
And if the promise becomes genuinely impossible today, pay attention to the difference between changing a decision and abandoning yourself because you're inconvenient.
You know the difference.
This isn't about becoming rigid. It's about noticing whether your word to yourself carries any weight. Because it should.
You should let you love you.
And sometimes love looks like softness.
Sometimes it looks like rest.
Sometimes it looks like leaving yourself alone.
And sometimes it looks like: No. I said I was going to do this for me.
So you do.
This Is Why Release No.001 Exists
Release No.001 was created to live inside these moments.
Not on a shelf waiting for you to become someone better.
Inside your actual life.
The morning you're already having.
The clothes you're already putting on.
The decisions you're already making.
The Piece becomes an Anchor for what you chose.
You see the words: You Should Let You Love You.
And today, you know exactly what they mean.
Keep your promise.
The Piece cannot keep it for you. It can remind you that you made it.
The rest belongs to you.

Before the Day Ends
Did you keep your promise?
If you did, don't rush past it.
Don't make it insignificant because it was small.
You said you would do something for yourself.
And you did.
Notice that.
Let yourself have the evidence.
If you didn't keep it, don't turn this into another reason to be cruel to yourself.
That's not the practice either.
Ask what happened.
Did you forget?
Did you keep moving it?
Did something genuinely change?
Did you decide that someone else's need mattered more?
Did you simply not want to do it when the time came?
Be truthful. Don’t punish yourself. Just be honest with yourself.
Then decide what happens next.
Maybe you make the promise again tomorrow.
Maybe you make it smaller.
Maybe you realize it wasn't actually a promise you wanted to make.
Maybe you keep it before you go to bed.
The point isn't to create a perfect record.
The point is to stop treating your word to yourself like it doesn't count.
Because it does.
The Remembrance
I keep my word to me.
I am someone I can trust.
Every promise you keep will not change your life, but it will give you something.
Evidence.
You said you would show up for you.
And you did.
